2018 August Bank Holiday Tournament Report

This year saw the highest number of entries for the annual August Bank Holiday Tournament for a number of years! The Tournament was split into three groups playing a sliding handicap round robin with the top two from each group progressing into the prestigious knock out stages.

May Bank Holiday 2018 winners.

Group 1 saw some fierce rivalries come to a head and some tough matches! In the opening match there was no holding back as Rob put Cameron on the floor with a powerful direct hit. A couple of big wins came from Henrietta and Cameron as they beat Tracey and Scott 5-2. Tracey and Scott then got their revenge by inflicting a 5-2 win over Rob and Cecily. Jonny and Delainey progressed through to the knock out round with Henrietta and Cameron, both scoring 16 games.

Group 2 was the largest of the three groups and saw some big wins throughout. Fiona and Mark topped the group with two 5-2 wins along the way, but the rest of the group was fairly tight with a tie break needing to be played to decide 2nd place. This battle was fought between Vanessa and Russell and Alex and David. Vanessa and Mark were the winners and progressed valiantly through to the knock outs. It was a bad day at the office for Rita and Stephen who didn’t manage to record a win with Lady Luck seeming to desert them for the day.

Group 3 was the tightest group with 4-3 wins everywhere. It was also a real shame for Linda, whose partner was a no show, but that didn’t stop her from cheering on the rest of the field. Janice and Ashan managed three wins from three to top the group, with Andy and Aree coming in at a close 2nd. The score lines show that this was an open group, but consistency and wily match play were the difference.

Delainey and Jonny and Henrietta and Cameron must have both bribed the match officials as they managed to secure a bye in the first knock out round. Fiona and Mark continued their imperious form to inflict a 6-1 victory over Andy and Aree whilst Janice and Ashan squeezed through with a 4-3 win over Alex and David.

The bye in the first knock out stage seemed to help as both pairs took notes on their opponents and enjoyed the rest. Delainey and Jonny beat Fiona and Mark 6-1 in the first semi-final, ending the fairy tale run to the final for Fiona and Mark. In the other semi-final Henrietta and Cameron took no prisoners in a 6-1 win over Janice and Ashan.

With the crowd looking on and cheering after a few beers the finalists took to the court. The previous results would have suggested a close game, but Jonny and Delainey clearly wanted to get to the beers as quick as they could and they romped their way to a convincing 6-1 win over Henrietta and Cameron.

Congratulations go to Jonny and Delainey for taking the trophy home and celebrations went on long into the night with Jonny ‘flossing’ with dance partner Cecily!

A huge thanks must go to Janice for organising the day and also to Linda and Richard. Not only did Linda not get to play, but she and Richard put on a great lunch spread of sandwiches to keep the competitors fed.

2018 Finals Day

The Finals Day Report

The 2018 Ealing Club Member’s tournament kicked off on a much sunnier and warmer day with an earlier start of 11 am and addition of LTA Umpires and the Ealing Ball Crew.

In the Open Ladies Singles in a repeat of last year’s 3-hour final between Mili Shah and Sophie Nelson. Mili showed her dominance on the grass to add to her titles and win in a much quicker affair this year.

The Handicap Men’s singles, Ladies Vets Singles and Men’s Vets Singles were also lucky enough to share the 11 am start. Jason Palmer defeated Daniel Villalobos to claim the first match of the day. Despite a delayed start, Anthony Calvert successfully umpired the Men’s vet’s singles and oversaw another Richard Leslie victory against Peter Buck in his attempt to catch up with the number of titles Peter has won in this event.

In the closest match of the morning, third team players and doubles partners Helen Hooke and Juliet Matthews competed in the Ladies Vets Singles. Toe to toe in the first set, Helen edged the set to win 7-6 then dominated the second set to claim the victory in time for the club’s traditional lunch prepared by Carole and Lynn.

For the third year in a row we were guaranteed a new Men’s Singles Champion with first team player Ben Moyon playing up and coming junior Mattias Southcombe. In an exciting match, Ben prevailed in three sets after two hours of enthralling tennis. Ben had a much quicker affair in the Men’s doubles teaming up with Jack Brooker to claim a solid win over Alan Brown and Sam Tirodkar.

Sophie and Mili teamed up in the Open Ladies and dominated to win the title against Anneka and Claire. Sophie then had her final match for the day in the Open Mixed, teaming up with David Charlton they fought well to beat Hiroko and Oliver Craven.

Helen was the most successful player of the day winning 3 out of 3 finals by adding the Ladies Vets Doubles and Restricted Mixed doubles partnering Juliet and Rakesh respectively.

The Ealing Ball Crew were recruited and trained by Steph Brown and Sangeeta Arora and assisted the Open Singles matches. We hope to recruit more ball crew members for 2019.

Thank you to Janice, Henrietta, Sangeeta who organised this year’s tournament and all the volunteer Umpires who made the event much more special for the players.
